Apigenin

What it is:

Apigenin is the active compound in chamomile tea.

Benefits:

It can help induce sleep by binding to receptors in the brain that promote relaxation and reduce anxiety.

Science:

This 2024 review discusses how in humans, clinical studies on chamomile extract, which contains apigenin, suggest that it helps alleviate anxiety, improve mood, and reduce pain. Additionally, higher dietary intake of apigenin correlates with better sleep quality in adults. Apigenin’s molecular structure allows it to interact with a variety of receptors and enzymes, influencing pathways involved in GABA (a neurotransmitter related to relaxation) and inflammation. Given the growing evidence of its effects on both aging and sleep, apigenin appears to have significant therapeutic potential.
