Diindolylmethane

What it is:

Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a molecule which is named after its structure, two indole groups attached to a methane group. A compound found in vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli, DIM acts as an antioxidant and is considered a natural health supplement.

Benefits:

Studies have shown DIM to help regulate low estrogen levels in males while showing positive effects on free radicals.

Science:

This 2011 research study investigated the effects of 3,3′-diindolylmethane (DIM), a compound from cruciferous vegetables, on thyroid proliferative disease, which includes conditions like thyroid cancer and goiter. Patients with took DIM daily for 14 days. The results showed that DIM altered estrogen metabolism by increasing the ratio of beneficial estrogen metabolites, suggesting an antiestrogenic effect. This indicates that DIM could help reduce the risk of TPD by modifying estrogen levels and acting directly in the thyroid tissue.
