What it is:
Ginger root extract is derived from the rhizome of the ginger plant, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Benefits:
Due to its ability to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, both animal and human studies have shown ginger to be effective in increasing sex hormones in males such as testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH).
Science:
This 2018 review finds that ginger supplementation in animal models generally leads to increased testosterone levels. Several studies reported that ginger enhances testicular function, increases testosterone production, and improves sperm parameters in animals. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant properties, enhancement of luteinizing hormone (LH) production, and increased cholesterol availability for testosterone synthesis. However, these effects are not yet confirmed in human studies, highlighting the need for clinical trials.
This study aimed to assess the effects of ginger supplements on semen parameters and hormone levels in 75 infertile men aged 19-40. After treating these men with ginger for three months, significant improvements were observed in sperm count, motility, viability, morphology, and ejaculate volume. Additionally, there were significant increases in serum FSH, LH, and testosterone levels, along with reductions in serum MDA, or malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation and increases in serum glutathione.
