L-Theanine

What it is:

L-theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea leaves, known for its calming effects on the brain without causing drowsiness.

L-theanine promotes relaxation by increasing alpha brain wave activity, which is associated with a calm, meditative state. It can improve sleep quality by reducing stress and helping the mind to unwind before bed.

 

Science:

This 2019 randomized, placebo-controlled trial explored the effects of L-theanine on stress-related symptoms and cognitive function in healthy adults. The study found that L-theanine significantly reduced stress symptoms, such as anxiety and sleep disturbances. Additionally, L-theanine improved cognitive functions, particularly verbal fluency and executive function. These results suggest that L-theanine can support mental health by reducing stress and enhancing cognitive performance. Alongside reducing sleep disturbances, L-theanine promotes relaxation, helping individuals unwind before bed and fostering a more restful night's sleep.
