What it is:
Shilajit is a natural compound that comes from sedimentary rock in certain regions of the world. It is best known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This substance has been used as a vitality booster and adaptogen mix in Ayurveda medicine for centuries.
Benefits:
The main components of shilajit include fulvic acid, urolithins, DBP chromoproteins (DCPs), humic acid, and over 40 trace minerals; the first three are considered the principal active ingredients. Research, mainly from in vitro and animal studies, suggests that shilajit may offer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and adaptogenic benefits, as well as properties that help with ulcers, muscle growth, diabetes management, and immune system regulation. Early human studies indicate that shilajit may positively impact several health aspects. Additionally, Shilajit might enhance male fertility by boosting testosterone levels and improving sperm count and quality; support tissue health (such as muscle, connective tissue, and skin) by increasing extracellular matrix protein production and blood flow; and benefit bone health by increasing bone mineral density and lowering bone turnover markers.
Science:
This 2019 study This study tested the effects of Shilajit supplementation on muscle strength and endurance in active men over eight weeks. Sixty-three men took Shilajit daily, or a placebo. The results showed that men taking Shilajit experienced less decline in muscle strength after intense exercise compared to those on the placebo. Additionally, they had lower levels of a marker related to connective tissue breakdown. This suggests that Shilajit helps maintain muscle strength and supports muscle and connective tissue health.
This 2010 study looked at whether Shilajit could help improve sperm quality in men with low sperm counts. Thirty-five men took 100 mg of PS twice daily for 90 days. By the end of the study, their sperm count and movement improved, and there was less oxidative damage to the sperm. Testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone levels also went up. The treatment was safe, with no negative effects on liver or kidney function. Overall, the results suggest that Shilajit can help boost sperm quality, which matches its traditional use in herbal medicine.
