What it is:
Vitamin D is an essential, fat-soluble vitamin that our skin synthesizes when exposed to the sun.
Benefits:
Supplementation of vitamin D3 has been shown to increase total testosterone levels, increase strength and power in athletes, and provide beneficial effects for participants with depressive moods.
Science:
This 2011 study investigated whether vitamin D supplementation affects testosterone levels in overweight men undergoing a weight reduction program. It involved 200 participants, including 54 men, who were randomly assigned to receive either vitamin D daily or a placebo for one year. Initially, both groups had low vitamin D and testosterone levels. After one year, the vitamin D group showed a significant increase in circulating vitamin D levels and improvements in total, bioactive, and free testosterone levels compared to baseline. In contrast, testosterone levels remained unchanged in the placebo group. The findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation may boost testosterone levels, but further studies are needed to confirm this effect.
