How to run the audit, in order

Don’t change five things at once — you’ll learn nothing. Work it like a checklist:

  1. Pull your last six weeks of numbers. If total volume or load hasn’t moved, that’s your answer. Add reps before you add weight.
  2. Count actual sleep, not time in bed. Seven nights, honestly logged. A floor beats an average.
  3. Weigh your protein for three days. Most people who think they’re eating enough aren’t. Athletes in a build phase need more than they estimate.
  4. Check your training frequency against your recovery. Five hard sessions with three days of real recovery is a deficit, not a program.
  5. Change one variable for two weeks. Then reassess. Discipline in the diagnosis, not just the effort.

This is the same order of operations whether you’re a strength athlete chasing a total, a combat athlete managing volume on the mats, or a tactical operator in the field with no control over your week.

But what if the basics are dialed?

Here’s the harder question. Training is smart. Sleep is solid. Nutrition is locked in. And you’re still stuck.

Then it’s time to look at the foundation itself — and ask whether the fuel system under your performance is complete.

Safety and who should check with a clinician first

  • Creatine has a deep safety record. Decades of research in healthy adults have not shown harm to kidney or liver function at standard doses (Kreider et al., 2017).
  • A plateau is not a medical symptom on its own — but unexplained strength loss, persistent fatigue, or poor sleep that doesn’t respond to rest is worth a conversation with a clinician rather than a new supplement.
  • Magnesium can loosen stools at higher intakes. Count your total if you already supplement it separately.
  • Talk to your clinician first if you have kidney or liver disease, are pregnant or nursing, are under 18, or take prescription medication.

FAQs

Can you build a tolerance to creatine? No. There’s no tolerance mechanism. Once your stores are saturated you’re getting the full effect — which is why a stall usually points somewhere else.

How do I know if I’m actually saturated? If you’ve taken 5g daily for a month or more, assume you are. Saturation is a function of consistent daily dosing, not dose size.

Should I take more than 5g to break a plateau? No. Above the saturation point, extra creatine is excreted. More isn’t the lever.

Could I be a creatine non-responder? It’s possible, but uncommon. Some people start with naturally high muscle stores and see less change. That’s a smaller effect than most plateaus, and it doesn’t appear after years of progress.
